Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, known as a global icon for women’s rights, announced Thursday that all New Zealand schools will have free access to sanitary products.
The main purpose is to help beat period poverty and increase school attendance.
Research showed several girls were missing school due to lack of knowledge about period, or money to buy the necessary products.
The government is talking with suppliers to provide a phased roll-out, and the program will cost NZ$25 million through to 2024.
Ardern won again the elections last October following several successes, such as the containment of the coronavirus in New Zealand.
