There is a new trend in Kenya. Many people have started ordering their espresso-based drinks with camel milk, instead of regular or vegetal milk.
Before, only the Somali community in Kenya used to drink camel milk, but this trend has become to big that now many cafes offer “camellates” and “camel-ccinos”.
Camel milk is not only consumed in Kenya, but in a big part of the Middle East, some parts of Asia and even Australia.
This market is very lucrative: although half a liter of cow milk only sells for 50 cents (dollars), camel milk ranges from 10 to 20 dollars. And even though there is not a formalized supply chain, this sector contributes over 100 million dollars per year to the country’s economy.
The lack of roads and cold-storage in Kenya means a big investment will be needed to create a stable supply chain.
One of the biggest producers of camel milk said that the demand is now so high that they have started developing flavoured camel milk and even yogurt.
