今日はどんな会話になるのか、さっそく見てみましょう！
今日のテーマは【遅刻したときの対処】
どんなに気を付けていても、予期せぬ事態に見舞われて遅刻してしまうこともありますが、その理由によって、伝え方や他の人の反応が変わります。今回はその一例を見てみましょう！
At the company
Yuki:
Don’t tell me he is late again…
John:
Yeah, it’s the third week in a row. And we have our meeting soon…
You:
Good morning guys. Sorry for being late.
Yuki:
The boss was already asking for you.
You:
I though so. But this time I have a good excuse.
John:
What do you mean?
You:
Yesterday you guys left and forgot to finish the documents for today. So I was working all night on that.
Yuki:
Oh God, that’s right. I completely forgot. I guess it’s our bad this time. Sorry about that.
You:
It happens. So I’m off the hook this time!
John:
Yes you are. I’ll tell the boss what happened.
会社で
Yuki:
まさかあいつまた遅刻か…
John:
そうだね、これで三週連続。この後会議があるのに…
あなた:
おはようございます。遅くなってすみません。
Yuki:
部長が探していたよ。
あなた:
だろうね。でも今回はちゃんと理由があるんだよ。
John:
どういうこと？
あなた:
昨日、ふたりとも今日の資料を終わらせるのを忘れて帰ったよ。だから一晩中その作業をしてたんだよ。
Yuki:
うわぁ、本当だ。完全に忘れてた。今回は俺達が悪かったね。ごめん。
あなた:
そういうこともあるよ。ということで、今回は、僕はセーフってことだね。
John:
セーフだよ。僕から部長に説明するよ。

◆ Don’t tell me
Please don’t tell me you forgot your computer again.
まさかまたパソコンを忘れてきてないよね…
And then I lost my plane tickets and…
そして、航空券を失くして、それで・・・
― No, please don’t tell me…
― いや、もうそれ以上は聞きたくないよ・・・
◆ Excuse
It wasn’t on purpose, I have a good excuse!
わざとではなかったんです。ちゃんと理由があります！
No excuses!
言い訳無用！
He is always full of excuses…
彼は毎回言い訳ばかりです…
■Memo:
「excuse」は「理由」と「言い訳」どちらの意味もあり、場合によって変わるので気を付けましょう。ネガティブな場面では「言い訳」の意味になることが多いです。
◆ Our bad
Sorry, it’s our bad the meeting didn’t go well.
ごめんなさい、会議がうまくいかなかったのは私達のせいです。
I’ve been waiting for 20 minutes!
20分も待ってたよ！
― My bad, my bad, I got into the wrong train!
― 悪い、悪い。電車を間違えちゃって！
■Memo:
「My bad」は少しカジュアルな表現ので、使う時は気を付けましょう。
◆ Off the hook
He was late today as well, but the boss wasn’t here so he’s off the hook.
彼は今日も遅刻だったけど、ボスがいなかったからセーフだった。
This presentation was better, but last time was very bad, so we aren’t off the hook yet.
今回のプレゼンは前回より良かったけど、前回がかなり悪かったから、まだ私たちは安心できない。
This music is off the hook!
この曲はすごい！
■Memo:
最後の例文はカジュアルな表現で、「すごく良い」と言いたい時に使える「off the hook」です。
今日のTALKは勉強になりましたでしょうか。
状況の深刻さに合わせて伝え方を変えることはとても大切です。実はすごくシンプルな状況で過剰な謝罪をしてしまうと、むしろ状況を悪化させてしまうこともあります。いろいろな状況を想定して練習を重ねてみましょう！
